A heat shield is form a protection designed to shield a substance from absorbing excessive heat from an outside source by either dissipating, reflecting or simply absorbing the heat. It is often used as a form of Exhaust Heat Management.

Due to the large amounts of heat given off by internal combustion engines, heat shields are used on most engines to protect components and bodywork from heat damage. As well as protection, effective heat shield can give a performance benefit by reducing the underbonnet temperatures, therefore reducing the intake temperature. A trans-atmospheric heat shield is a protective layer on a spacecraft or ballistic missile that is designed to protect it from the high temperature of atmospheric entry, on a body with an atmosphere, such as Earth, Mars and Venus. Most, if not all, spacecraft use a type of heat shield in order to protect from the high temperatures during re-entry.
Heat shields are very important to the space shuttles and the failure of these systems can be castastrophic, as seen in the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.
